ABOUT ADPC ACADEMY

The ADPC Academy is the capacity development department of the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC). It hosts all of the ADPC flagship training programs, and supports other training activities by conducting comprehensive training needs assessments (TNA), training design, delivery and evaluation. It fosters long term partnerships with countries through institutional partners, national training institutions, and research and development agencies to provide customized trainings and capacity development tools in person as well as through E-learning modalities.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE MONTH

Training on Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction

 From August 20-31, 2018, 16 participants from 9 countries attended the 26th Training Course on Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR-26) in Bangkok, Thailand. During this 10-day training, the participants learned how to design and implement programs for reducing disaster risks and vulnerability, increasing the capacity of communities to build and promote a culture of safety and self-reliance.
They also had the opportunity to conduct hazard, vulnerability and capacity assessments in Tha Ngam Community, Singburi province to analyze the community’s disaster risks and learned how the community prepare for disasters as well as how they practice sustainable livelihood in Klong Rangsit, Pathumthani.

In reference to community-based disaster risk management, we would like to present a field practitioners’ handbook. This resource will be useful to individuals in the disaster risk management field. It can also serve as a guideline for disaster management at the community level.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction Agency (TNDRRA), Tamil Nadu , India 

ADPC signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction Agency (TNDRRA) - an operational arm of the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority. Included in the MoU is the commitment between TNDRRA and ADPC to jointly provide training opportunities to government officials and institutions by establishing robust training and capacity development systems. 

Under this MoU, TNDRRA and ADPC are committed to jointly conducting a training need assessment (TNA) and developing appropriate training courses and delivery methods in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR).
Both partners will also enhance their cooperation in carrying out research, organizing seminars; and in exploring opportunities for international trainings and study visits.

Tailored Training Program to the Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC), Erbil, Kurdistan

ADPC, through the ADPC Academy, is engaged by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to strengthen the Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC) of Erbil, Kurdistan’s leadership and effectiveness in crisis management to ensure the safety and welfare of the civilian population during disasters and crises. 

Mr. Aslam Perwaiz, Deputy Executive Director and Dr. Sunil Prashar, Project Officer from the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) made an official visit and discus with the the Director General of JCC, Mr. Hoshang Mohamed Abdulrahman and shared aims and objectives of the inception visit. Further, the Director General was updated by UNDP on the progress on the training program to the Joint Crisis Coordination Centre.

ADPC Internal Capacity Building 

Staff members are key to the effectiveness and development of the organization. For this reason, ADPC has implemented initiatives to strengthen the capacity of its employees.
For instance, the ADPC Academy started a workshop on enhancing facilitation and training delivery skills.

National Humanitarian Network Pakistan

A volunteer network, founded in 2010 in result of interactive dialogue in National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) “to act as an independent and vibrant voice to engage with stakeholders throughout Pakistan for promotion of humanitarian values by influencing policies and building capacities to ensure right based humanitarian response”. 172 humanitarian organizations are members of NHN from across Pakistan and it is open for all national and local organizations engaged in humanitarian assistance or disaster management advocacy.  NHN focus on “Effective and Accountable Humanitarian Governance” – mainly in Response and Disaster Preparedness through four major areas i.e. “Coordination/networking, Advocacy, Capacity Building and Information Management”.

NHN is a key network in Pakistan which is well connected with various stakeholders and demonstrated its effectiveness to do proper advocacy and lobbying for access, space and principled response. NHN supports stakeholders in collecting and timely sharing of critical information for preparedness and response as its members are spread across Pakistan and even in hard to reach areas.
